Broadband Phone
A broadband phone, also known as an internet phone, works just like a regular home phone. The difference is that you are using the internet to place and receive calls. Making and receiving phone calls is no different than using a regular land line or cellular phone. You pick up the phone, wait for the dial tone, and then dial any phone number you want. I won't waste your time explaining how to answer a phone call.
The technical details are that you need to add a phone adapter to the existing computer setup you have. For this to work you need a DSL or cable modem that goes through a router to your computer. The phone adapter is added in parallel to the router and connects to the phone.
Your new "path" should look something like this: (1) internet connection, (2) DSL / cable modem, (3) router, (4) phone adapter, and (5) telephone.
The previous path was an internet connection, your modem, a router, then your computer.
The phone adapter is provided by an internet phone service company that you sign up for.
The phone adapter converts your voice, which is an "analog" signal, into a signal that a computer can understand, a "digital" signal. The digital signal is then sent over your broadband internet connection. This process is know as Voice Over Internet Protocal (VoIP) or Internet Telephony.
With a broadband phone service you can expect to pay lower rates for your phone bill.
